Penrith AFC Ladies Vs Bishop Auckland Ladies FA Cup - jpsmith

Penrith AFC Ladies Vs Bishop Auckland Ladies Match Report 18/09/2019

Penrith AFC Ladies 1 – 0 Bishop Auckland Ladies (AET)

With both teams literally dead on their feet, Penrith AFC Ladies and Bishop Auckland Ladies seemed to have fought to a stalemate in this FA Womens Cup tie. The game was already in Extra Time as the 90 mins had failed to produce a goal, still the teams were cancelling each other out.

But with time virtually up and a dreaded penalty shoot out looming, Penrith won a corner in the dying seconds of the game. Hannah Coulthard swung in the corner and Charlotte Smith looked certain to score but her effort was blocked on the line. An almighty scramble ensued and Sophie Nutter and Chez Brierley both had efforts blocked before the ball ran free to Sarah Smith who lashed the ball home with what proved to be the last kick of the game.

Wild celebrations followed as Penrith had claimed their place in the 3rd Qualifying round of the FA Womens Cup. Durham County League team Bishop Auckland were playing their first ever FA Cup game and were determined to enjoy the experience.

They started a little nervously but soon got into their stride and their pacy wingers were causing problems for Penrith. Penrith relied on their ever dependable defence to thwart the Bishops attacking play. And gradually worked their way into the game. Penrith on several occasions got behind the Bishops defence but on each occasion the keeper quickly came off her line to their rescue. In honesty both defences were on top in the tie and clear chances were few and far between and it was no surprise that the scoreline remained 0-0 after 90 mins. Into extra time both teams were tiring.

Penrith almost broke the deadlock when Sarah Smith’s effort appeared to be blocked by the hand of the Bishops keeper even though she was outside the area but the referee waved “play on”. Bishops pushed hard for a winner, but with the last kick of the game, it was Penrith who snatched the victory and progress to the next round.
